Happy Birthday to Ruby & Vera!

The tail end of my pregnancy was rife with exhaustion, discomfort and (except to go to NSTs and OB appointments) immobility. At about 34 weeks along, the OB discussed the pros and cons of a vaginal delivery versus a planned cesarean section and, after a very long conversation with Joe, we decided that (especially since our little Baby B was breech) a planned cesarean would be the best course of action for us. So we set a date and eagerly anticicpated the arrival of our precious little girls. September 6th at noon it would be!

The birth day!

On the night of September 5th I prepared my bag for the 4-day hospital stay that would proceed the c-section, did any last minute cleaning, and let my mind reel all night long! Not only was I about to undergo surgery, something I had never experienced before, but I was going to meet my two daughters... I absolutely could not comprehend the magnitude of the event about to happen.

Outside the hospital just a couple short hours before our girls were born!

After very little sleep Joe and I took the 5 minute walk to Alta Bates at 10:30 am, arriving two hours before the surgery. We immediately were put in the pre-op/ recovery room, met our nurse that would assist us throughout the day, Alaina, and began to anxiously wait for the biggest moment of our lives! I put on a gorgeous hospital gown, was poked and prodded, and given an intravenous catheter in my hand (that would stay in for about 24 hours). At about 12:30 pm I walked to the cold, sterile operating room and the swarms of doctors and assistants got to work (on me!). I remember thinking that it was so ironic that the very intimate interaction that Joe and I had engaged in to get to that moment had ultimately transformed into this extremely public, fully-exposing event that would leave me feeling far from concealed. But, I didn't care!

Dr. Carlisle, my anesthesiologist (thus, my best friend that day), administered the spinal just a few minutes after I entered the operating room. I, perhaps pathetically, thought it hurt quite a bit more than I had anticipated. The dull pinch down the left side of my back subsided quickly and the doctor and nurse assistant, who I believe was named Peggy (our conversation centered around her uncles that were identical twins), helped me lie down as quickly as possible before I was completely paralyzed from the chest down. Peggy and Alaina, not 5 seconds after me lying down, administered a catheter and Dr. Carlisle put a big blue sheet right over my chest. My head, arms and hands were the only parts of my body that I could feel. But, my arms were constricted as the anesthesiologist had placed a blood pressure cuff and sort of sleeve that emitted hot air onto my arms. And as if I didn't feel claustrophobic enough, an oxygen mask was then placed over my mouth for the duration of the surgery.

Joe came in just a minute later and I finally felt like I could take a deep breath and (somewhat) relax. I grabbed his hand and didn't let it go until I knew the girls were out, safe and sound. Dr. Ahsan, my obstetrician, finally began the surgery and walked me through the entire process. She was very reassuring and light-hearted during it. At one point I, somewhat dramatically, asked, "I'm feeling very tingly all over... is that normal?" to which she replied, "you mean you're tingly with anticipation to meet your twins?!" Needless to say, she calmed me down. After what felt like 30 minutes (but I'm told was only a few minutes), I heard Dr. Ahsan say, "here comes Baby A, dad do you want to take a look?" Joe stood up and looked over the divider. I didn't see Ruby come out but from the reaction I saw in his face and sweet sound in his voice, I knew it was an incredible sight. He was able to see Vera come out completely, as they were both born in the same minute: 1:04 pm. Joe walked over to them right away and came back to report just how perfect and beautiful they were.

The very first time I laid eyes on the new (added) loves of my life, they were bundled up and held up on either side of my head as I was strapped down to the hospital bed. Any pain or discomfort I had completely disappeared when I looked up at my daughters' adorable little faces. I could not believe that the ever-growing bump in my uterus actually incubated these two perfect beings. It was such an indescribable, overwhelming moment that I will never, ever forget.

The girls were taken to be further checked and Joe went with them. I had to stay in the operating room for about another 30 minutes for Dr. Ahsan to finish up the surgery. I was then lifted onto a hospital bed by 2 nurses, Dr. Ahsan and Dr. Carlisle (I mention this because I was scared shitless as I felt like they were essentially pushing me off the operating table and onto the floor... this obviously did not happen) and wheeled into the recovery room. Joe and I spent the next few hours in the recovery room nuzzling with our new little ones. The girls were so sleepy but right away the did a great job latching on and I was really hopeful we'd have success with breastfeeding! And, after 17 days, it has been, indeed, very successful (tiring, but successful).

We moved onto our large hospital room once I could lift myself up of the bed and move my legs... quite the challenge after all my body had been through that day! It was great to move to the new room and Joe and I were elated to know that our girls did not have to go to the nursery at all. So, we have not had to spend even one night without them by our side.

I don't think I can accurately describe the love that filled my heart and soul the moment that Ruby and Vera came into my life. All I know is the feeling of sheer joy mixed with immense responsibility is one that has only grown with each day that my daughters have been in my life. I am so incredibly fortunate and will strive to be the best mother I can be to them every day for the rest of my life.

32 weeks 4 days

The last couple weeks have been such a whirlwind. We headed to Fresno last weekend and my buddy, Jessica, threw me a great baby shower! The theme was two peas in a pod and EVERYTHING was in accordance (even the cupcake toppers... too cute!). I got to cuddle with my niece, Olive, which melted my heart! Her siblings were playing outside in the sprinkler (of course in Fresno the weather was sweltering), so she got all dressed up in her swimsuit too! (Below) I love her!

Olive Kay 3 weeks and 3 days old

Yesterday we FINALLY relocated to a bigger apartment in Berkeley. It was quite a long day yesterday but I know that all of the effort now will be worth it when the girlies get here! Tomorrow Joe and Nick are going to unpack as much as possible and get the apartment organized. Though I told Joe I want to do the nursery. My vision is way too precise to relinquish it to anyone else ;) The new location is ideal. My Moms of Multiples (MoMs) group is about a 20 minute walk down the street, BART is close by, there are great cafes and shops around the corner, lots of family-friendly activities, just IDEAL! Now just to get off my big ol' preggo butt and walk around!

32 weeks 4 days. Getting there!

31 weeks today!

Today I have officially reached 31 weeks of pregnancy with the twins! I feel like all of the sudden I am in the final stretch of the pregnancy and now I'm scrambling to to make sure everything is organized before these cuties get here. Of course, it does not help that I haven't been able to allow my nesting instinct to take over, as we will be moving from our one-bedroom apt in 10 days! I absolutely cannot wait to set up the girls' nursery and be able to take a deep breathe knowing that, even if our stuff isn't necessarily organized, they will have a space just for themselves. Quite the relief. Also, the neighborhood in Berkeley in which we'll be moving is very family friendly, has much more space for the girlies, and is right down the street from my Moms of Multiples group. So, it should be a great location for us for the next couple years at least.

This upcoming weekend we'll be heading to Fresno to FINALLY meet our adorable niece, Olive. More and more photos of her are popping up on social media, and she already is growing so quickly. So, it will be nice to meet her while she still is newborn size! And, of course, we're excited to visit with our family there as well :) On Saturday my buddy, Jessica, is hosting a baby shower for the girls and me. It will be great to visit with some family and old friends that I haven't seen since we've lived in Fresno. Should be a fun time!

31 weeks with moving stuff everywhere!

Third trimester, here we go!

All is well and I feel relatively sprightly, considering. I've made it to 29 wks, 3 days today and my 5'1" body is really beginning to look (and feel, more than anything) very ridiculous (as evidenced below)...

28.5 weeks
Most importantly, however, the girls are doing great and have continued to reach all of their growth milestones. On July 3rd Joe's parents joined me as I went to the girls' 28.5 week ultrasound. They showed their adorable little faces (below), which was especially nice because at the last appointment a month prior they both covered their faces with their arms like little divas ("no pictures please!"). Baby B is breech and thus very cooperative as far as seeing her face. I think she looks a lot like her dad and thought it even more appropriate that the ultrasound image made it look like she has a little Dali-style mustache (a feature both her father and grandfather are known for). Baby A, on the other hand, was hiding her little face for the majority of the ultrasound. But, the sonographer finally got an image of her nose and eyes, with her arm covering half of her face. I think she has the infamous "Schott" nose. But, we'll have to wait until they're here to see! I am told that they are getting so squished up in there that they are unlikely to see at least Baby A's face anymore. Though the good news is that she is head down, so I'll take it!

Baby "B" July 3, 2013
The visit with Joe's parents was really lovely and we were able to incorporate a fun-filled visit while organizing some necessities for the babies; a win/win! Joe's sister, Meggie, will be out in August, so it will be wonderful to get a chance to visit with her as well before the girls get here.

Some of the BIGGEST news we received while the Schmidts were visiting was that my newest, adorable niece Olive Kay was born on July 4th! My sister-in-law, Laura, began feeling contractions only a few hours beforehand and had her completely drug-free. AMAZING!!! We've been ogling over all of the photos that Marshall and Laura have been posting and sending us. But, we'll get a chance to snuggle her up on the weekend of July 27th... and CANNOT wait!!!

So far the third trimester has been treating me well. Let's hope that the move on August 1st, exams and further baby growth doesn't slow me down too much!

Long-awaited update

Welp, as you can see it has been several week since my last post. Lots of great things have occurred since the beginning of April. I'll try to concisely and chronologically lay it all out:

1. April 12th- OFFICIALLY had the ultrasound to determine our little cuties are GIRLS! Very exciting. Unfortunately, the video of our reveal party is not uploading (soon I'll get it up here!).

2. April 29th- The girls' anatomy scan went FABULOUS!

3. May 17th- Graduated from SF State's Bilingual Credential program. Such a great feeling of being rewarded for a lot of hard work!

4. May 31st- Taught my last day of student teaching with my 5th graders. They were so sweet and threw me a surprise baby shower. So touching.

5. June 1st- Celebrated our (very soon to be born) newest niece as we traveled to Fresno and attended Laura's baby shower. It's been so much fun being pregnant at the same time and knowing our little girls are going to be so close in age. Can't wait for the holidays this year!

6. June 8th- 16th- Went up to Seattle to: visit with family before I'm completely immobile (that day is rapidly approaching), celebrate the girls' baby shower, attend Baylee's high school graduation (I'm old!!!), and enjoy a "baby moon" in the San Juan Islands. It was a bit surreal to be 6- 6.5 months pregnant while sleeping in the bed (the same one!), eating at the familiar restaurants and driving around the same neighborhoods that I did when I was just a child. While surreal it may have felt, more than anything I now envision how our little girls are going to be seamlessly incorporated into our Northwest family when we head up for vacations. So, I'm very glad I waddled myself to the airport, ached for two hours on the plane as my sciatica didn't let up (whaaaaa I know, I know), and proceeded to waddle around my hometown :)

The baby shower was so lovely. I've attached a photo of the adorable table with my cheekily standing beside it. It was put on by one of my very best childhood friends, Mary and her mother, Laurie. Every mother in the room (which there were many) told me their favorite part of motherhood and those who aren't mother yet shared their favorite thing about their mother. It was so sweet and I feel so lucky to have such amazing women as role models not only for myself but for these two babies as well.

Our baby moon to the San Juan's was so much fun. Well, I should say it was so relaxing! We went for a couple nights to the quaint, port-side town of Friday Harbor, Washington. We went whale watching (and spotted a transient Orca!), checked out the beautiful exhibits at the Whale Museum, strolled around the town's little boutiques and coffee shops, and ate A LOT of delicious food (and Joe of course had some great local brew!). Although we didn't squeeze in every possible tourist attraction Friday Harbor has to offer, it was perfect for us, and a perfect way for us to spend some quality time together before these girlies get here.

Joe giddy to ride the Clipper and get to Friday Harbor

Holding the baby Orcas that we got for our baby Orcas :)

So pretty!

This upcoming week (in four more days!) our family from the East Coast (Joe's mom and dad) will be coming out to the Bay Area for almost two weeks! I can't wait to get to spend this time with them and enjoy the 4th of July together as well. Joe's brother, Nick, has been out here for an internship this last month and will continue to be here until mid-August. So, we've been so lucky to get to hang out with him and show him around a few of our favorite places. Meggie, Joe's sister, will be visiting mid-August. So, we'll have a chance to see EVERYONE by the end of the summer and by the time the twins are here. It's going to be a very fun-filled, love-filled summer indeed! Can't wait :)

So many new things!

I have been so bogged down with school work these last few weeks I feel like I haven't had a moment to do an update. So, here is a few Schmidtty happenings from those last few weeks:

We went in on March 15th when the babies' were about 12.5 weeks along. Joe and I were blown away to see the amount of growth and MOVEMENT our little cuties were displaying! We were so happy to finally see those classic profile shots (below). Although baby A was moving around like crazy, so it took some time to get a good one! Baby B was sleeping for the majority of the appointment, then woke up for a bit. So, we were lucky enough to see them both move around. I found it so fascinating that they could be moving with such vigor, yet I felt absolutely nothing. I can't wait to finally feel them kicking in just a few short weeks! The sonographer told us that she could probably see what the sexes were. But, we decided to wait until the next ultrasound to get an even more accurate view. We headed to Fresno on March 22nd to enjoy a few days of spring break with our family and friends there. It was so great to see our family and especially fun to chat, go maternity shopping, and EAT with my (at the time) 24.5 week pregnant sister-in-law :) We had such a great time.

As my next ultrasound was scheduled for March 28th, and I would still be on spring break, we decided we would head BACK to Fresno that following weekend to do the twins' oh-so-anticipated (albeit a little cheesy) gender reveal party. Here's how it worked:

  1. Brought a card into my ultrasound with a line that read "Baby A is..." and another that read "Baby B is..."
  2. Was lucky enough to get a very cooperative sonographer who didn't tease me while I covered my eyes while she checked the babies' "sex parts."
  3. Went to the restroom to change and had her write the sexes in the card provided, under the appropriate slot, and seal it. Tightly.
  4. Once in Fresno, we purchased four cans of silly string; two blue and two pink.
  5. The morning of the reveal a friend of my sister-in-law's hid away, opened the card, chose the appropriate colors* to be sprayed on Joe and me later, removed the lids, and discarded the other two cans. (*string color is only distinguishable by the lid color)
  6. At the time of the party, Joe and I sat out on the grass and our niece, Hazel and nephew, Roscoe sprayed us with the string! It was a moment neither of us will ever forget.
We had so much fun learning the sexes of our babies together with friends and family. We even had family FaceTiming and Skyping from all over (Joe's parents and brother even joined in from Paris). The photos and video are amazing, but, I will wait to show them until the official confirmation ultrasound on April 12. Can't wait!

Xoxo

Morning (aka ALL-DAY-EVERYDAY) sickness

There are definitely many advantages to knowing that you are expecting from an early stage in the pregnancy: having all the time to prepare, keeping your body as healthy as possible, sharing the special secret with your partner and being giddy about it for as long as possible. However, there are some, in my opinion, disadvantages to knowing very early as well: having to keep that special secret for several weeks on end and not exclaiming "I'M PREGNANT!!!" to your loved ones, acquaintances, or the complete strangers that cross my path every day! Far and away the most difficult aspect of knowing of my pregnancy early on has been waiting on morning sickness to kick in or not kick it. Kick in it did indeed! At about week 5, or the week of January 21st, I was engulfed in a tidal wave of nausea, vomiting, major food aversions, exhaustion and heightened sense of smell (which I only say to emphasize that even the slighted whiff of something unpleasant, sends me into a heaving frenzy). Currently, at 10 weeks along, I am lying here in bed (at 11am on a Monday morning) wondering how in the world I am going to make it through the next few weeks with this morning sickness. I am hoping and praying that it will end by the beginning of my second trimester. But, when I look at the babies in their ultrasound picture, I am reminded that it is a positive reminder of their healthy development. Joe has been such a trooper and continues to crack me up through this initial part of our journey as parents. For his sake I hope he gets to see the "glowing," maternal side of me rather than my head stuck over the toilet bowl :)
